Living with York Region's hard water

One thing that catches people off guard moving to Newmarket from outside York Region is the water itself. The municipal supply runs hard, loaded with dissolved calcium and magnesium, and that mineral content builds up scale inside water heater tanks, clogs faucet aerators, and leaves the white film people notice on shower glass and kettles. A tank that would coast to 15 years somewhere with soft water can start struggling sooner here if it never gets flushed. Everything within Newmarket proper runs on York Region municipal water and sewer, not private well or septic, so at least that part of the picture is consistent street to street.

What the housing stock tells us

Newmarket sits on the Yonge Street corridor, and that history shows up in the pipes as much as it does in the architecture. The oldest part of town, close to the Old Town Hall and Riverwalk Commons downtown, was built up mostly between the early 1900s and the 1950s, and plenty of those houses are still running original cast iron drain stacks with galvanized supply lines patched in section by section wherever a run finally gave out. Beyond the houses

Newmarket's also got more going on above ground than most towns this size, and it shapes what we get called for. Southlake Regional Health Centre draws staff and patients from across York Region, Upper Canada Mall anchors a long commercial strip along Davis Drive, and the Newmarket GO station, on the Barrie line, means a lot of commuter households where nobody's home to catch a slow leak until it isn't slow anymore. Fairy Lake and the Nokiidaa Trail cut through the middle of town, and the older homes closest to that low-lying stretch near the millpond tend to feel spring runoff more than the drier subdivisions further out. We also get a fair number of calls in Armitage and around College Manor, pockets that mix mid-century bungalows with newer infill, so the plumbing age on one street can vary house to house more than you'd guess just driving past.
