Sewer Backing Up? What to Do in the First 30 Minutes

Water or worse coming up through a floor drain or a basement toilet is one of the calls that makes people panic, and it's a fair reaction. But the first half hour matters more than anything else in how bad the cleanup ends up being. Here's the order we'd tell you over the phone if you called us right now.

Stop Adding Water to the System

The very first thing: stop running water anywhere in the house. No showers, no laundry, no dishwasher. If the main line or your lateral is blocked, every drop you send down a drain has nowhere to go but back up, usually at the lowest point in the house. Tell everyone in the house to hold off on flushing too, for the same reason. It sounds obvious once someone says it, but in the moment people forget and make the backup worse without realizing it.

Keep People and Pets Away From the Water

Sewage backup isn't just gross, it carries bacteria you don't want on skin or tracked through the house. Keep kids and pets out of the affected area, and if you have to walk through it, rubber boots and gloves, not bare feet. Don't run a shop vac through standing sewage unless you know it's rated for it. This is a case where waiting for someone with the right equipment beats getting it wrong yourself.

Whose Pipe Is It?

This is the question that decides who fixes it and who pays. The city owns the main sewer under the street; you own the lateral, the pipe connecting your house to that main, including the section that runs under your own front yard. If the backup is affecting only your house, it's almost always your lateral, and that's on you to fix.
